Around Oconee: GSU graduates announced
Several local students received degrees when Gainesville State College held its spring 2009 commencement in May on the main campus in Gainesville.
A total of 351 degrees were awarded. The majority of GSC students received two-year associate degrees and will transfer into University System of Georgia four-year institutions. In 2007, 1057 GSC students transferred to other schools; 43 percent of those went to the University of Georgia.
Locally, Dominic LaBarbera, a technology management major from Bogart received a baccalaureate degree. Graduating magna cum laude was Watkinsville resident Brian Andrew Jacobson with a degree in environmental spatial analysis.
Receiving an associate degree or certificate were John Andrew Ruark of Bishop; Shakeya Walata Snipes and Lauren Page Harrison, both of Bogart; and Kimberly E. Spencer, Takitta LaRaina Lumpkin, Clifford Andraes Foote, Dane VanGorden Siler, Brian J. Mauldin and Matthew Preston Wood, all of Watkinsville.
Seniors to celebrate
The Oconee County Senior Center will hold a "Star-Spangled Senior Celebration" from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the center in Oconee Veteran's Park.
DJ Johnny Soul will provide music, and the event includes a picnic lunch, door prizes and activities. The cost is $3 for nonmembers of the center.

Fourth of July event set for Eagle Tavern
The city of Watkinsville and Oconee County will sponsor a Heritage Celebration for the Fourth of July holiday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Eagle Tavern, according to the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce.
The event will be preceded Friday by art tours in downtown Watkinsville from 6 to 9 p.m., in conjunction with First Friday on Main.
New hoops camp kicks off soon
The first MVP School of Basketball will be held July 20-24 at Prince Avenue Christian School in Oconee County.
The camp will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for boys and girls ages 9 through 15. Camp director Michael V. Palmer has been a part of basketball in Oconee and its surrounding counties for about 17 years.
Palmer currently is the head coach of the Prince Avenue Middle School girls basketball team. The camp staff includes Camille Murphy, who played for the University of Georgia team from 1999 to 2002 and played on two New York City state championship high school teams; Chip Wilson, who co-coached the Malcom Bridge Middle School boys team to a 17-0 record and league championship in the 2008-09 season; and Jeff Mayr, a boys team assistant coach at Oconee County High School.
The camp will host an awards ceremony the last day of camp.
OCAF hosts Terry Kay screenwriting class
Local writer Terry Kay will hold a workshop called "Take One: a Fundamental Look at Screenwriting" on Sept. 26-27 at the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation.
The course is designed as an introduction to screenwriting for those who have limited experience in the medium, and a refresher for those with experience. Kay, who won an Emmy for the teleplay "Run Down the Rabbit," worked for eight years as a film reviewer with The Atlanta Journal.
